New Cancer Fund Benefits from Holiday Delights

MOSCOW--Several donations are helping kick off a new program to provide comfort services for cancer patients in Latah and Whitman counties.

The Light A Candle Fund, a new program offered through Gritman Medical Center, started with $1,500 in seed money from Hogfest, an area cancer-awareness fundraiser, whose grants are awarded through the Gritman Auxiliary. This money is designated for massage services through Gritman Therapy Solutions for cancer patients referred by their physician or a Gritman staff member.

The fund will further be helped by a $5,000 pledge from the Gritman Auxiliary. The Auxiliary voted to donate $5,000 in proceeds from Friday’s 45th Annual Holiday Delights. This will be in addition to the departmental grants that are funded each year by the Auxiliary.

Holiday Delights is December 2 and will feature wine tasting and a silent auction. Tickets are available in Bertie’s Gift Shoppe and at the Moscow Chamber of Commerce, and at the door. The event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Latah County Fairgrounds.

Becky Chavez, of Gritman’s Administration Department, teamed up with Debi Dockins, director of Volunteer Services, to create the Light A Candle Fund after cancer touched their families all too closely.

"Providing extra services that patients often don’t have the money for improves their quality of life and helps ease some of the pressure that comes with facing cancer," Chavez said.

As the fund grows with local donations, more services will be added, including Wellness Center passes, gas vouchers, grocery vouchers, housekeeping services and more.

"We will let the requests and available cash drive the scope of services," Chavez said.

Light A Candle uses a simple approach allowing local physicians, hospital staff, and members of cancer related programs within Gritman Medical Center to request help for patients to meet a need or a want, and be able to provide a service to bring relief to patients during their fight against cancer.

The pledge from Holiday Delights will help Light A Candle reach the program’s goal to provide hope, strength, and assistance to help enrich and enhance the lives of our friends, family, and community members affected by cancer.
