Gritman Medical Center awards eleven scholarships

Scholarships totaling $10,500 were awarded by the Gritman Medical Center Auxiliary and the Gritman Foundation to local students pursuing their higher education goals.

Five students received funds from the Chanda Morris Memorial Scholarship.

  • Bailey Anderson, Potlatch High School, received $500. Anderson plans to study nursing at Lewis Clark State College.
  • Mattie Pickard, Genesee High School, received $1,300. Pickard plans to study pre-nursing at the University of Idaho.
  • Sadie Corley, Troy High School, received $500. Corley plans to study nursing at Lewis Clark State College.
  • Sarah Kwate, Troy High School, received $1,300. Kwate plans to study biology at Gonzaga University.
  • Wilson Guo, Moscow High School, received $2,400. Guo plans to study public health and neuroscience as a dual enrollment student at University of North Carolina and Duke University, respectively.   

All five recipients are Junior Volunteers at Gritman Medical Center. This scholarship was established in the memory of Chanda Morris, a Gritman Medical Center Junior Volunteer, who died in an auto accident in 1991. She was named Gritman Jr. Volunteer of the Year in 1991, after volunteering for more than two years and contributing 331 hours. This scholarship is awarded through Gritman Medical Center Volunteer Services.

One student received funds from the Besst Family Scholarship.  

  • Leslie Dodson, Moscow High School, and Nell Lokteff, Moscow High School,  each received $500.

The Besst Family Scholarship recognizes high school achievements, extra curricular activities and leadership skills as a Junior Volunteer at Gritman Medical Center. This scholarship is a pay-it-forward scholarship based on leadership and mentoring of younger junior volunteers. This scholarship is awarded through Gritman Medical Center Volunteer Services.

One student received funds from the Maurine Cherrington Scholarship.

  • Leah Bafus, Troy High School, received $1,000. Bafus plans to study in a medical-related field at either the University of Idaho or Washington State University.   

Maurine Cherrington is a longtime Gritman supporter and charter member of the Gritman Auxiliary. Her appreciation for the hospital and its programs continues through her generosity to our scholarship programs. This scholarship is awarded through the Gritman Medical Center Volunteer Services.

One student received funds from the Janet Chisholm Martin Healthcare Scholarship.

  • Cody Solders, University of Idaho, received $1000. Solders is currently pursuing his degree as a Physician’s Assistant. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 2010.

The Janet Chisholm Martin Healthcare Scholarship was established in 2007 by Mrs. Lois Michael to honor her daughter, Janet Martin, a longtime nurse at Gritman Medical Center. This scholarship is awarded through the Gritman Medical Center Foundation.

Two students received funds from the L. Clay Boyd Memorial Healthcare Scholarship.

  • Adam Kappmeyer, University of Washington, received $1000. Kappmeyer is acquiring his Doctor of Medicine degree. He graduated from Logos School in 2009.
  • Samantha Jo Sperber, Genesee High School, received $500. Sperber plans to attend North Idaho College to study nursing.

Clay Boyd was a former CEO of Gritman Medical Center. The intent of the L. Clay Boyd Memorial Scholarship is to continue Clay’s legacy of helping fellow health care workers to continue their education and advance their careers. This scholarship is awarded through the Gritman Medical Center Foundation.
